CALLING ALL CAREER DEVELOPERS

Before launching Yonder, I met with career coaches and counselors who work with high school students and young professionals. I wanted to better understand the work they do and what needs they have. What I heard really validated what I hope to offer with Yonder. If you work in career development, then perhaps the following resonates with you too.

While career developers enter the profession via a range of pathways, many are trained as teachers, psychologists, or coaches. Their expertise and ongoing development center on understanding what drives people and using effective communication skills to help young people think through and make decisions about life, work and study. 

What’s missing for career developers, from my observation, is access to expert knowledge on:

• The full range of jobs that exist today, including relatively new or emerging professions
• A broader view of available qualifications, beyond the typical list of programmes
• Ways in which work and workplace culture is shifting in certain sectors, including the more established fields
• The impact of AI and other new technologies on today’s job market 
• How current societal trends might change the career landscape in the future

By building familiarity in these areas, career developers could augment their practice by improving the quality of information they offer to young learners and their parents or guardians.
